ESRA Inter District Quiz Rules

ESRA Inter District Quiz Rules  (Revised June 2024 by Charles Eden )

These rules have been agreed at ESRA Executive

In line with other “All Island” events the All Island Quiz is a competition to bring the various districts together for an enjoyable, fun, event and to help people from different parts of the island mix and make friends. It is not meant to be a competition to find the most intelligent, educated and well informed “Eggheads” in Mallorca.

The competition is held as a series of quizzes with each District playing a single game against each of the other districts over a 12 month period, and this should be followed by lunch. As there are 4 Districts competing currently each District will host each of the other districts in alternate “quiz” years. i.e. if South West host North in year 1 the following quiz year North will host S.West. Each District will therefore compete in 2 home and 1 away game or 1 home and 2 away. Each year the Executive member responsible for the All Island quiz will produce a suggested Monthly schedule.

The Inter Districts quiz will run through the calender year and should preferably be scheduled between February and June and September to November. It will be the responsibility of the Home District to contact the Away District to arrange suitable dates between them. Clearly the earlier fixtures are arranged the easier to schedule the quiz into your District’s social calendars. (As Charles Eden currently acts as quizmaster for all of the Districts please keep him informed of your plans and ensure he is available for the proposed dates.)

It is suggested that there is no need to arrive for the quiz before 11 a.m. for an 11.30 a.m. start, this should easily enable a start for lunch at 1 p.m.. Experience has shown that even an 11.30 a.m. for a 12 noon start is fine especialy where the away team have to travel some distance, with lunch planned for 1/1.30 p.m.

As Charles is currently the Exec. Member responsible for the Quiz and Quizmaster he will make sure that scores etc, are recorded and the yearly winners announced. Should this change a member of the Exec. should be appointed to be forwarded the scores and collate the scores etc.

THE QUIZ Rules

Each quiz will consist of 6 rounds each with 9 questions. There will be 3 alternative answers to each question.

The rounds will consist of:

Fixed Subjects: Geography

People

History

Sport & Entertainment

Art, Music & Literature

General Knowledge

It is up to the individual District to decide who sets the questions. Currently Charles Eden sets and runs the quizzes for all Districts. If you decide to have a local quizmaster, please remember that the person setting the quiz should consider the participants, not their own speciality, when setting the questions. For example if a person with a history, geography or science degree is setting the questions, they should remember that what is simple to them may be gobbledegook to the average ESRA quizzer.

There is an established format used for all quizzes so that the “All Island Quiz” has its’ own identity and is differentiated from other “District” quizzes that take place during the year. This should be used by all Districts

(N.B. Each district should have the format. If your District does not have a copy of a quiz including Markers records please ask and I will be happy to provide an example)

SCORING:

There will be a point for each correct answer and the Teams can use a joker to choose a subject for which they wish to double their score. (This should be chosen before the quiz begins) Each District should split up into teams of 4 where possible.

The scores for each team should then be added together by District and divided by the number of their teams competing, to give an average score. The winning District is the one with the highest average score.

.

RESULTS:

Currently after the event the individual team scores and the average score will be documented by Charles Eden, I will keep a “league table” with the winning team scoring 2 points, a draw scores 1 point to each team, and a loss scores 0 points. In this way the District that wins the most quizzes will be the overall winner. In the event of a draw, the winner will be decided based on which one has the highest total average score over the year. I will announce the scores and winners to the Exec Committee and the “Inter District winners Certificate” will be awarded to the winning District at the Exec. AGM

NOTE The maximum score per team is 63, if a majority of the teams get very close to the maximum score the quiz should be considered too easy. On the other hand if the average score for both competing Districts is 37 or less it is probably a little too hard and therefore less fun for the average quizzer. Please try and adjust the difficulty if appropriate. The Executive member responsible for the quiz will be responsible for checking that the scores represent a fair quiz in all districts and will provide a brief report at the end of the quiz period with any observations and recommendations. As you know this is not an attempt to be “Big Brother” just a way of keeping this All Island event consistent and popular for all of our members.

GUIDELINES for RUNNING THE QUIZ:

There should be a quizmaster and 2 markers, 1 from each District to mark the opponents results and then check each others marking. You may also wish to have an extra person/s (“helper”) to distribute and collect the Jokers and questionnaires. (Currently Sheila and Charles are doing the marking but a least one person from the Home District should be available to help)

Each District should divide their “quiz squad” into teams of 4, permission of the opposing team organiser should be gained if a team of more or less than 4 wants to play (there should be a maximum of 2 teams of none standard configuration maximum team 5 people min 2 people but please do not field 2 teams of 2 they should form 1 team).

Each team should be given a Joker which is completed by each team to choose a round in which to double their score, before the quiz begins. This should be collected before distribution of the first 2 rounds.

The first 2 sets of questions i.e. Geography and People, should be distributed to the teams face down. There should be an Original to be returned and a Copy for the team to keep and retain a record of their answers. The quizmaster will then tell them to start and give them 12 minutes to complete both rounds. When 12 mins. is complete the quizmaster, will call for the contestants to finish and hand their completed rounds to the “Helper”, who will collect them and hand to the markers. (competitors also like to receive an update on the time they have left i.e. 6 mins & 1 min.)

Experience has shown that quizzers like a copy of each round to keep for themselves.

At this point the quizmaster should announce the answers to the 1st 2 rounds, while the “Helper” distributes the next 2 rounds, 3& 4, which should again be kept face down until the Quizmaster allows the teams to begin,. Again experience has shown that the quizzers like the quizmaster to read out the question before giving the correct answer. The above is repeated for rounds 5 & 6.

MARKING:

The markers will count up the number of “points” scored for each round, doubling up the score for each team’s joker round. The scores for each team should then be added together by District and divided by the number of that Districts “teams” competing, to give an average score. The winning District is the one with the highest average score. The winning scores of the top team for each district and the final average scores should be announced and we have traditionally given a prize to the highest scoring teams of both competing Districts, usually a bottle/small bottle of Cava or wine to each member of the team of 4.

N.B. Any “team” score below 30, if this is an exceptionally low result compared to other teams in the same district, should be excluded from the total and the number of “teams” reduced accordingly when calculating the average. ( if you have 6 teams and 3 score below 30 this should not be considered as an exception, however if it is one or two teams out of 8, and the other teams have scored close to, or more than 40, this is clearly an exception. The reason for this rule is that we do not want to exclude people who enjoy the quiz but don’t have the GK to do well, equally we don’t want more able quizzers to feel that they have been let down by their less knowledgeable fellow ESRA friends. This should help produce a fair result. Please use your own discretion when applying this rule

If you need any clarification or assistance with your quizzes please call me and I will try my best to help.

Have Fun

N.B:

As I am currently compiling all of the quizzes please ansure I have someone to send the quiz questions to in time for them to have them copied before the event. Current district organisers now understand the format but incase of change. The question Papers should be collated for distribution on the day in the following sets. Joker. Rounds 1 original and Copy with Round 2 original and copy. Idealy they should be paper clipped together as this makes it much easier on the day. The same format for rounds 3 and 4 then 5 and 6.

If the above is followed it makes it much easier on the day and requires less people to help, not to mention lowering the stress levels for the organisers.
